Greatest Costa Rica stamps ever auctioned from the Frederick R. Mayer Collection

1901 2c Vermilion and Black, Center Inverted

Greatest Costa Rica stamps ever auctioned

Fresh color, nicely centered, o.g., very fine. Although not listed in Scott, this invert has been well known for many decades. Its first public appearance was in the 1935 sale of the Arthur Hind collection, where it realized £4/10. This is the only recorded example of any value of this series with an inverted center. Certainly one of the most important 20th century errors of Costa Rica. As well as being an essential stamp for a serious collection of inverted centers of the world; signed H. Bloch and accompanied by a 1980 RPS certificate; ex-Hind.

Selling price: $67,500
